Update: It should be fixed now. Also, Dan Taylor has written up a lovely introduction to the project at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2010/09/reflecting_online_buzz_around.html

Hi again. Phew. As I hoped, it turns out it was an unintentional oversight rather than a sinister plot.

As John O' Donovan wrote http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2008/11/knowing_when_to_go_1.html last year, the BBC has been improving the way it does external linking. (ooh.. it looks like you commented; your summary in comment 8 on that post shows that you know exactly what I'm talking about here). Essentially, when we link externally we want to get the benefits of knowing how many people visit those links without having them lose the googlejuice. Cleverer people than me have developed some nifty ways of doing that using javascript, but it seems that in those /buzz pages we've accidentally used the old redirect method rather than the new approach. Oops. Definitely not the intention, and we're hoping to fix that (along with some other last minute tweaks) before the actual launch.

Roo - thanks for the reply. Let me know when you find something out (for now I've stuck an update in the intro saying there's still some work to be done!)

Daniel - sorry that delayed comment moderation made you look like a parrot!

Hmm. You're right. Thanks Malcolm. Let me look into it and get back to you. (Obviously getting the process working end to end before making it properly live was a good thing!)

Thanks for the links. Roo - the links on the page you've linked to are going via some weird 302 redirect - EG the friday 13th link to the Culture and the City blog is actually to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/buzztracker/buzz/b00t4pgh/ext/-/http://cultureandthecity.blogspot.com/2010/08/sherlock-update-what-moriarty-did-next.html which redirects to http://cultureandthecity.blogspot.com/2010/08/sherlock-update-what-moriarty-did-next.html via a 302 redirect.

A 302 redirect doesn't pass any link value, so you may as well have stuck nofollow on them. Is there a plan to change this?

Malcolm,
Is this the sort of page you are looking for?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007v097/buzz

(Looks like you can stick '/buzz' after a number of programme urls.)

Best,
Dan

Hi Malcolm. You're right; it's not quite live yet. Should be launching properly in the next few weeks. When it does, you'll start to see a new module on programme pages which have any buzz. For now, if you want to see what the results are like, try adding /buzz to the end of a programmes URL - e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t4pgh/buzz/

Obviously, once it's properly live we'll be linking from programme pages to those /buzz pages so people know they're there.
