Thanks for this posting, Malcolm. It interested me for several reasons - website revamps, usability in general, and of course a mild interest in what Delia Smith gets up to.

As I said in my own blog posting, which referred to your post here, I doubt if the lady herself had much to do with the revamp. My guess is that she left it up to the web design and development people. You would think that professionals would do a better job. I mean, some of us are amateurs and we wouldn't cock things up that badly. As Chris Lake said, "It beggars belief".

I'm glad I found your blog and am enjoying looking around. :-)

I think I've finally worked it out. The old site must have been on both deliasmith.com and deliaonline.com domains. They've launched the new site on deliaonline only - leaving the old one on deliasmith.
So the eton mess recipe was on a URL on deliaonline before. But now they've launched the new site, they've deleted all the old pages on deliaonline (shudders at SEO foolishness) - hence the 404 you now get.
Some better planning and some redirects could have avoided all this ...

Also, check out how they've decimated their SEO in one fell swoop: type just about any recipe name into Google (eg. Eton Mess) and Delia is usually top of the natural search. However, clicking on the link gives you a page not found error. Wasn't there any budget put aside for redirects if they were changing links? Very poor.

What a case study on how NOT to do a site transfer. Wow. I wonder what http://www.redtechnology.com/ have to say for themselves about this? (The dev team according to footer link)
