The Express's obsessions 3

Posted on December 15, 2009 by Malcolm Coles

The Express has launched a searchable archive:

Here you can view, download and print historic pages from Daily Express newspaper dating back to 1900. The Sunday Express is also available from 2000.

Ever wonder which of the Express's obsessions it's most obsessed by? Here's what the archive search tells us:

  • Hurricane: 8,643 results
  • Asylum seekers: 6,070
  • Immigrants: 6,777
  • McCann: 3,605
  • Thatcher: 25,326
  • Princess Diana: 34,757

Looks like my alternative homepage wasn't far wrong ...

PS Martin asked about the McCanns and the Express's libel damages and apology below. These are some screenshots I took for a later blog post I'd planned. Not sure if these were covered by the apology, but if you've paid out a load of money, is it wise to include these (click to see larger)?

Or should newspaper archives include warts and all?

  1. Martin Belam says:

Did you cross-reference to see if the archive contains all of the articles about the McCanns that they had to pull from the online version of the site after they issued the apology?

  2. There were some interesting front pages visible, certainly - I'll post them above in a sec ...

  3. Done. I haven't searched for specific articles as you have to register to use advanced search...
