Times Online top of newspaper Stumble league 1

Posted on February 19, 2009 by Malcolm Coles

'Share' functionality is all-but-compulsory for newspaper sites these days - but if the results for StumbleUpon are anything to go by, TimesOnline is streets ahead of its competitors, with the FT having lots of work to do.

The following table shows how many separate pages of each newspaper site have been 'Stumbled' (it doesn't show the number of times each page is stumbled).

The last column shows whether the site includes StumbleUpon in its sharing functionality.

League table of stumbles for newspaper sites

Newspaper  Pages stumbled  StumbleUpon as share option
 Times Online  699  No
 The Sun  487  No
 Guardian  382  Yes
 Daily Telegraph  357  Yes
 Daily Mail  292  Yes
 The Independent  183  No
 Daily Express  67  Yes
 Mirror  62  Yes
 FT  22  Yes

Top two don't use StumbleUpon icon on their pages

Interestingly, the top two - the Sun and Times Online - don't include StumbleUpon as part of their on-page sharing list.

Perhaps suggesting that spraying social bookmarking icons around your site has little effect on how often people submit your pages to the services ...

Methodology: The results are based on a google search of the stumbleupon site (site:www.stumbleupon.com) using the inurl command to find newspaper stumbles (EG inurl:express.co.uk). The total figure is the last result if the option to show results similar to those already shown is used.
